Welcome to our Kura & Kohanga Portraits site!
Poihakena Portraits are now offering a Māori Portrait Service for Kohanga Reo & Kura Kaupapa. Our service is available to other early childcare and education providers as well.
Instead of your usual individual photos in school uniform we can dress your tamariki in kākahu and create beautiful portraits that capture their heritage. Families are welcome to send their children with other kakahu as well.
We will photograph your children both without kakahu and with that way you get a photo even if they dont want to wear a kakahu. We have a variety of kakahu in our wardrobe and with the help of your kaimahi or kaiako dress the children for portraits.
We have an online ordering system with 2 types of password protected galleries. We offer either individual galleries for each whanau or have a collective kohanga gallery. Emails are required from each whanau for the first option.
If you would like to book your Kura or Kohanga in for a Portraits contact us to find out when we will be in your area.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens on the day?
We arrive at your kohanga on the morning of your photo day. We will set up our backdrop, lights and kakahu. We like to arrive at the beginning of the day so we are there as the mokopuna arrive. If they are dropped off and are not all there at 9am we will start with individual portraits. Once all the mokopuna have arrived we will get the group photo done. We can do this inside or out depending on weather and the space you have available.
How do we see the photos?
The photos will be uploaded to a password protected gallery. Whanau will have 3 weeks to order a package and get free Kohanga pickup. After that date you can order but postage will be to your home and charged.
Can we have sibling photos?
Yes. If the siblings attend Kohanga/kindy together.
Can we bring other tamariki & get a whanau portrait?
No. These photos are for the kohanga/kindy mokopuna only. Whanau will need to book into a Portrait day which should be happening the weekend before or after your Kohanga photo day.
Can our tamariki get moko stamps?
We dont apply them as it can upset some pepi. Kaimahi are welcome to apply them if the mokopuna are used to them.
